Tour Plan

Matarawa Railway Station

This is a tiny commuter station on the Wellington to Masterton line. If you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, you are correct.

Start your ride and head into the beautiful Waiohine Gorge one of the many access points into the mighty Tararua mountain range. Primarily gravel, this section provides numerous views of the Waiohine River, Lake Wairarapa and winds its way through some of the best native bush the Wairarapa has to offer.

Site of the original Walls Whare used by generations of trampers as the setting-off point for trips into the Tararuas. Explore the campsite; there are lots of picnic spots and a toilet block. It is a two-minute walk through the bush to the swing bridge. Prepare yourself for a heart pounding challenge; the bridge is high above the Waiohine River and is approximately 50 metres wide. You must cross it, it is a must-do, but PLEASE don't try and ride it! Stop in the middle to take photos if you dare. Another track leads from the campsite down to the river. Here you will enjoy knock-out views of the Gorge and connecting swimming holes in pristine clear water. CAUTION: the river rises fast; do not enter the riverbed if the river is in flood. 12 KM

Waiohine Campsite

The second part of this route returns you from the Waiohine Gorge (feast on the views from the other direction) and takes you to the Carterton Mountain Bike Park This is a family friendly level

Carterton Mountain Bike Park

This is an optional clip-on to the trip; it is a challenging 4 Km climb (much easier on one of our turbo-charged E-Bikes) but worth every bit of the effort. At the top you take in views on a fine day of all five Wairarapa towns (Masterton, Carterton, Greytown Martinborough and Featherston), Lake Wairarapa and the Tararua mountains. A feast for the senses. Walk up to the Lookout Shelter and read the gory end for Dickey Sayers after whom the mount is named. 32 KM

Mount Dick Lookout

Meander your way via quiet country roads to the Carterton Railway Station which opened in 1880 and is the third oldest station in New Zealand. The station building houses a museum which is open every Sunday 11 am to 4pm or by arrangement. Like Matarawa Station, Carterton is a commuter station on the Wellington to Masterton Line. It is a busy station, particularly during the working week. The station is only 1 KM from the main street of Carterton. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to explore before your pick-up or self-transport, to return to Cycling Tom Bike Shop. 36 KM or 46 KM including Mount Dick
